Does Nextlink give you a public IP? (CGNAT and static IP for port forwarding)

Short answer: No, not by default. Nextlink says in its own service disclaimers that it uses carrier-grade NAT. For game hosting, security cameras or any port forwarding, Nextlink says you'll need to buy a static IP, a paid monthly add-on priced by how many IPs you need (no published price).

Does Nextlink use CGNAT?

Yes, officially. Nextlink's service disclaimers say: "Nextlink participates in Carrier Grade NAT, as does many Internet Service Providers (ISP). This means customers who use our service will not always have the same public IP address." Its support FAQ says the same. Both are linked on the Nextlink ISP page.

Path to a public IPv4: a paid static IP

Nextlink's disclaimers spell it out: "If customers participate in hosting online games, use security cameras, or conduct any port forwarding, they will be required to purchase a Static IP." Static IPs "are available for an additional monthly rate based on the number of IPs needed." Nextlink doesn't publish the rate, so ask when you order. It also says it only forwards ports on its own managed routers, so ask how port forwarding is set up on your equipment. Compare with other ISPs on static IP prices.

How to confirm on your line

  1. Follow how to tell if you're behind CGNAT: a router WAN IP in 100.64.0.0/10 means CGNAT.
  2. After the static IP is set up, forward a port and run the checker's port test. Its report sums up what you can host.
