Does Mediacom give you a public IP? (CGNAT, static IP and servers)

Short answer: It depends on the service. Mediacom's own residential agreement says its Bolt fixed-wireless service doesn't provide public IP addresses, so hosting and port forwarding won't work there. For wired (cable) internet, Mediacom doesn't say; customer posts suggest a public IPv4. Static IPs are business-only (from $5.95/mo on Mediacom Business), and the residential acceptable use policy bans servers for anyone outside your home.

Does Mediacom use CGNAT?

On Bolt fixed wireless, yes in effect: the residential customer agreement says "The Service does not provide public IP addresses" and warns that web hosting, some security camera systems, gaming systems and peer-to-peer file sharing may not work. On wired internet, Mediacom's pages don't say either way. The details are on the Mediacom ISP page. If you're on Mediacom cable, run the check below and tell us what you see.

Static IP on Mediacom

The residential acceptable use policy doesn't allow static IPs unless your plan expressly includes one. Mediacom Business lists static IPs at $5.95 a month for 1, $19.95 for 5 and $29.95 for 13, plus a $25 setup fee. Compare with other ISPs on static IP prices by US home ISP.

How to confirm on your line

  1. Follow how to tell if you're behind CGNAT: compare the router's WAN IP with your public IP.
  2. Run the checker. Its port test checks a forwarded port from outside, and the report sums up what you can host.
