Does Spectrum (Charter) use CGNAT?

Cable · National · last verified 2026-10-16

Short answer: Sometimes. Spectrum (Charter) uses CGNAT on some plans or in some areas, according to Spectrum (Charter)'s own documentation plus customer reports. Static IP: Business only. IPv6 is available, so devices can still be reachable over IPv6.

Can I self-host on Spectrum (Charter)?

CGNAT by default?Some plans/areas

Confidence: Medium: ISP hints or confirms part of it; the rest is customer reports. A Charter engineering talk at NANOG 71 (2017) documents Charter's MAP-T deployment (IPv4 address sharing over IPv6). That's an official but non-customer-facing source; which customers are on MAP-T or CGNAT today is from customer reports.

Community reports say Spectrum generally does not use CGNAT but uses MAP-T (a different IPv4-sharing method) in places, and some markets report CGNAT. Not confirmed by Spectrum.

Terms on running serversNo explicit ban

The current Spectrum Residential AUP (verified 2026-10-16) has no explicit 'no servers' clause; it limits service to residential, non-commercial use. Older versions banned 'any type of server ... not consistent with personal, residential use'.

The Residential Services are for personal and family use (residential use only) within a single household. ... You may not use, or enable others to use, any Service to operate any type of business or commercial enterprise.
